There are many reasons to why we should not develop Antarctica. First, the oil and fishing has had problems over the past few years resulting in significant environmental damage.
Although there may be many useful resources like coal, hydrocarbons, iron ore, platinum, copper, gold and other minerals to be found, development is not permitted under the Antarctic Treaty.
In 1998, an agreement was reached to add a 50 year ban on mining until the year 2048.
Mining in Antarctica is banned because it is the onlypristine and untouched environment in the world. Mining is banned because it wreaks the environment of Antarctica for all its fauna and flora and also makes the hole in the ozone layer grow bigger.
I'm not entirely sure but I do know that Antarctica is the heart of the earth's weather system. With mines in Antarctica people would damage the great white continent. It's dangerous too, and the worlds resources are being used up very quickly.
Another Answer
Beside the fact that mining is expressly forbidden by The Antarctic Treaty, there is no technology today sufficient to protect the natural environment in polar climates from the vagaries of mining.
Fuels freeze, equipment fractures, humans can't survive, robots freeze up: the technology used to exploit Natural Resources doesn't perform in extreme cold weather.
According to the Antarctic Treaty that governs all land south of 60 degrees S, all that region is dedicated to the scientific study of the health of planet earth.
Mining and other commercial activities are not allowed under the treaty.
if we mine antarctica it would destroy the beautyful landscape and also destroy the animals homes
Antactica has many useful minerals and so bascially to get rich :L
There is no evidence that Antarctica even has minerals present.
Protect the environment
Mining is not permitted in Antarctica; there have never been any successful mining operations there -- it's too cold.
because some people from antarctica cant read Chinese
There is no mining in Antarctica, per the Antarctic Treaty.
There is no mining allowed south of 60 degrees South Latitude, according to the Antarctic Treaty.
There is no mining allowed in Antarctica according to The Antarctic Treaty.
Don't feed the animals Don't mine in Antarctica Don't land air transport near the wildlife Don't hunt, whale, or fish
All -- 100% -- of the people in Antarctica, are people...in Antarctica.
Countries on every continent except Europe and Antarctica mine diamonds.
you can do work or something else.
Scientists and people who live and work on the continent support science. The mining that takes place is called data mining, since data is the major export from the continent. Antarctica's data tells the story of the health of planet earth.
