Why do professional sports leagues not allow their teams to play against opponents who are not members of the same league?

Play Among Sports Leagues

Money. In many different ways. Would you pay $100+ to watch the Miami Heat battle the South American Basketball Association winners? Maybe, but not a sell out. Plus, what if your star is injured in a useless game?

Professional sports are a business, not entertainment.

While I certainly agree with the above, there is some competition between leagues. Both the NBA and NHL have played games against European clubs as early as last year. If your interested in checking it out the following are NHL teams facing European clubs this season:

  • Boston Bruins @ Belfast Giants selects (Elite Ice Hockey League, United Kingdom) -- October 2nd 2010
  • San Jose Sharks @ Adler Mannheim (DEL, Germany) -- October 2nd 2010
  • Minnesota Wild @ Illves Tampere (SM-liiga, Finland) -- October 4th 2010
  • Boston Bruins @ HC Bili Tygri Liberec (Czech Extraliga, Czech Republic) -- October 4th 2010
  • Columbus Blue Jackets @ Malmö Redhawks (HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden) -- October 4th 2010
  • Phoenix Coyotes @ Dinamo Riga (Kontinental Hockey League, Russia/Latvia) -- October 4th 2010
  • Carolina Hurricanes @ SKA St. Petersburg (Kontinental Hockey League, Russia) -- October 4th 2010
