because for the most part they are open to the air. Some people are more prone to them then others and it depends on your overall health and how your sinuses are built whether or not you will get an infection.

There is not a good blood flow so white blood cells cannot fight a developing infection as easy something with good blow flow (i.e. eye, arm, heart). It is also very porous, so there are a lot of nooks and crannies for things to get stuck in and not be washed out. And once it is inflamed then it is hard to get your sinus to drain keeping all the bacteria in there to start a party.

There is low blood supply, the nose easily traps bacteria, and once the sinuses are swollen it is hard for them to become un-swollen.

How an infection in the nasopharynx can also result in an infection in the paranasal sinuses and the middle ear?

They are all connected. The nasopharynx is connected posterior and inferiorly to the paranasal sinuses and is connected to the middle ear by the auditory (Eustachian) tubes. The mucous membranes of the nose, paranasal sinuses, pharynx, and middle ear are all connected by ducts. Infections can spread through all those areas.
