Countries like Saudi Arabia are rich because of mineral resources and countries with rich soil and dependable rainfall tend to be richer than desert lands or rocky soil. Also over-population relative to agricultural capacity makes a country poor.

A countries 'richness' is not entirely based on its natural resources (otherwise Brazil might be the richest country in the world today) but also with each country's history and culture. Through the centuries the richer countries often exploited the ones that are poor today. The poor ones were colonies where there were no structural investments, only things being taken away. So, without structure, they could not evolve as the rich ones did. They grew depending on the richer for basic things. They are still dependent nowadays, but in other senses. That's why former colonies are often poor countries.

However, some colonies such as the USA ,Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia were not used only to take resources away, but to be developed and that's why a good governmental structure evolved. A stable and honest government in which the leaders are public servants makes a country richer, but a corrupt government ,in which the leaders take all they can from the people, produces an environment that makes the country poor.

Cultural differences are very important, particularly a work ethic and educational development. Many of the rich countries became rich because of scientific discoveries , inventions , industrial processes and medical advances that greatly increased productivity. Most of the rich countries invested heavily in schools, roads, rail roads and medical facilities.

An Opinion:

Well that is a very complicated question. I would honestly say that it is because some people in this world are very greedy. Take the queen of England for example. If she was not greedy why would she live so lavishly while she well knows millions of children starve to death and live in poverty every year because of the life style that "capitalism" has created. While she could sell the carpet she walks on and feed many young children. It is because the rich think they are "superior" to the poor and rule down upon them with military force.

It is that same question that started world war two for all the wrong reasons against the wrong people.

Along with world war one, both sides of the war were funded by the same bankers, once again fueled by greed.

The world is very complicated. Our society complex and not understood by many. The earth once upon a time could only support 500 000 people. But with the discovery of fossil fuels and machines they have paid for our food and farms thus creating a world population of 6 billion people that would all die if gas ran out.

I think the world is a conspiracy.

Another Perspective: A lot of bad opinion and some good information. As the population of earth keeps increasing, there will be more poverty and no effective way to stop it altogether. Pockets of poverty, large and small, around the world are nature at work.

You can superficially blame it on any system of government; but every system that has existed in the history of mankind has produced poverty for some. All creatures on earth suffer periods or pockets of poverty; the outcome for those affected is death or survival. Unlike humans, the other creatures don't look for who's to blame. Like other creatures of the world, some human poverty can be blamed on the place and time that a person or a people find themselves; drought, floods, various forms of pestilence, etc. No one living on earth gets a guarantee that this can't happen to them.

Poverty caused by the actions of people, whether deliberate or an unforeseen consequence, are also part of nature. People are the ones who run things, governments, business, or social programs. More do a good job than do not or we would not have as much 'civilized' society as we do. Much of the dire proclamation on causes and blame are directly from the minds looking at the glass as half empty. That doesn't make it a fact. As long as people are on earth in charge of things, there will be rich people and poor people, that is the nature of being human. You can't 'fix' it and you can legislate it.

Beyond all relevant historical/cultural factors, the simplest explanation of why countries are rich or poor is productivity. The economic wealth of a country, to a large degree, depends on its ability to produce goods and services. Since that production is a function of how productive actors are, higher productivity usually translates to higher economic output and thus higher wealth and vice-versa.

Why do some countries have a high death rate when other countries have a low death rate?

For lots of reasons. They may not have enough food. Diseases are more widespread. They don't have as good a health service as richer countries. Living conditions are not good, so they may not have clean water and the standards of hygiene are not as good. Many poor countries experience famine. Many poor countries are not as well equipped to deal with natural disasters, so they suffer more when they happen. For all of these reasons and many others, the death rate is higher and life expectancy is lower in poor countries than in richer countries.
