There are generally three indicia that will lead to the large disparities in the standards of living of people in Southwest Asia: (1) stable governments, (2) petroleum and/or natural gas, and (3) trade with the West. Countries that have stable governments (i.e. are not currently or recently involved in a civil war), have petroleum or natural gas deposits, and/or have a high volume of trade with Western countries (USA, Canada, Western Europe) tend to do better than those that have volatile governments, no Natural Resources, and/or have restricted trade.

How has oil production affected some countries in southwest Asia?

Oil was first discovered in Southwest Asia in 1908. Since then, oil fields in many regions of Southwest Asia have been found, and other countries rely heavily on Southwest Asia for oil to meet the demands of their economies: transportation requires gasoline (which is oil in a refined form) and power plants burn oil to produce electricity. Specifically, the United States, Japan, and many European countries heavily depend on Southwest Asia for oil because it is home to such vast amounts of petroleum. So, Southwest Asia's oil fields are important to many countries' economies, and thus the world economy, making Southwest Asia very important in terms of world position. Why are desalination and dip irrigation not used more in Southwest Asia?

it sounds like a simple solution right, that's what i thought but its not. desalination systems are very costly and with the recession right now, its not the first thing on peoples lists. Since south west Asia isn't one of the most richest countries, its very costly to install a new desalination system, which other countries such as North Africa have others to come in and pay for it. for example, Hyflux won US$100m to install a new one there. If they had someone pay for theirs too, i bet they would use it more...

How is learning history useful for your lives?

Well, if you want to become a historian or an archaeologist, it is of course very important. But other than that, without history we wouldn't know why we're living this way and how we're living the way we are. For example- in the countries such as the US, Australia and New Zealand, it's important that the citizens of those countries know why they live there, and where they originated from. The citizens living there now have connections that go waaayy back to British families, that travelled across the seas to discover the new countries. Learning about old tribes and traditions in those countries also help to give an idea of which people they share the country with (depending if they're still around or not). Although that's one specific reason why, there are many others too.

How does population growth affect the standard of living?

The standard of living increases with the density of the population. A higher standard of living comes from an efficient division of labor and increased trade. When each member of a society is allowed to do what they can do with the greatest competitive advantage and freely trade the results of their labor and other resources with others who do the same it results in the highest possible standard of living. A larger population provides for a more efficient use of resources, including labor, by increasing the opportunity of trading what one does best for that produced by another. Examples of high population density with a lower standard of living, when found, can be explained by restrictions placed on the trade or interactions of the people.
