If the chicken egg doesn't hatch, it might not be ready to hatch. If it has been under the mother hen or in the incubator for 21 days (and has been turned for the first 18 days, twice a day), it should be ready to hatch. Some chickens can hatch at 21-24 days though. If they won't hatch at all, they are probably dead, maybe from being too cold, maybe not even fertilized. They also could be stuck in the egg shell, and if you think they are, the best thing you can do, is listen for sounds that the chicken would make (cheeping, moving round (or trying to)).

This can be due to MANY reasons -

  • The eggs weren't fertilized.

Either A) You don't have a rooster, B) If you do, he's infertile, C) Something went wrong in the hens reproductive tract, or D) The rooster isn't doing his job.

  • The eggs weren't correctly shaped.

Only the highest quality eggs can be used for hatching with any success.

  • The eggs were too porus.
  • Your humidity was too high or low.
  • Your temperature was too high or low.

It only takes 1 degree over or under the mark to kill/deform a chick.

  • The eggs weren't turned/exercised correctly.
  • You didn't clean the incubator before incubating, allowing bacteria to grow and kill the embryos.
  • If they were incubated by a hen...

Any of the above could have happened, or she wasn't a good broody and got off nest too frequently/didn't turn them.

  • The chick had a deformity and died in the shell.
  • The chick was weak and couldn't hatch.
  • The chick didn't correctly absorb the yolk.

It could be one of these, or many of these together. Sometimes you just don't know what went wrong.

Sometimes eggs hatch late or early - but if they don't hatch within 5 days then that means they have died in the egg or weren't fertilized.

Most likely because it was infertile. Hens in egg factories are almost never in contact with a rooster that will fertilize the eggs, so they can't hatch, so it's usually no use trying to hatch a store-bought egg.

Another reason is that the egg WAS fertile, but got too cold when in the incubation process, and died.

Sometimes, the eggs placed in the incubator may not have been fertilized. Because of this, no chick will grow on the inside and therefore not hatch. Another reason could be that the temperature was not high enough. To incubate eggs, temperatures need to be around 98, 99, or 100. This temperature also needs to stay constant. If the temperature drops for too long or too often, the growing chicks may 'freeze' (become too cold and suffer from hypothermia.) In other cases, people may have forgotten to keep a small cup or bowl ofwater in the incubator. The air needs to be moist in order for the chicks to develop properly. When incubating chicks, you must check the eggs every few weeks to see if they are growing properly, and if you not you can throw the eggs away. In a dark room, hold the eggs up and shine a flahlight through it. If you see a chick or growing chick moving around it is growing. If not the egg is a 'dud' and can be thrown away. Hopefully this answered your question and I wish you good luck in your next attempt to hatch chicks because it is a wonderful experience!

sometimes... things just don't work out for the better little one, but rainbow's always soon follow terrible storms, i mean maybe... it just wasn't the egg's time ya kno? who are we to judge. I actually have respect for eggs that don't hatch, b/c that egg was like, i'm not ready. AND NO MEANS NO.

truthfully i do not know but they probably were not fertilised and therefor no chicks were present. The eggs may have been away from heat too long so the chicks died.
