Antibiotic resistance results from misusing antibiotics. Antibiotics should only be used to treat bacterial infections. Many industrial farmers will give healthy animals a daily dose of low level antibiotics to stimulate growth. These daily doses help to create antibiotic resistant super bugs.

It is actually not the person, it is the bacteria.

Bacteria undergo DNA mutation at an incredible rate. Most mutations are fatal to the bacteria, but because bacteria can reproduce so quickly, and because their numbers are so immense, these fatal mutations do not significantly affect bacteria populations.

Every once in a while, a mutation will convey resistance on the bacteria cell. For example, a bacteria's DNA may mutate and cause the cell to begin excreting a substance that inactivates penicillin.

Now imagine that this mutated cell is one of a billion infecting a human. The human goes to the doctor and is prescribed penicillin. When the patient takes his prescription, the majority of bacteria cells are killed and she feels better. One cell remains, however -- the resistant, mutated cell. The mutated cell quickly reproduces and the patient is now again infected with a billion bacteria cells. Because these cells are all descendants of the mutated cell, they are all resistant to penicillin.

Penicillin is now useless for this patient's infection.

How can one be antibiotic resistant?

People do not develop a resistance to antibiotics, instead bacteria in the body resist the effects of the antibiotic. The bacteria changes somehow and instead of the antibiotic eliminating it, the bacteria survives and continues to cause harm and infection. Some bacteria neutralizes the antibiotic, others fight and flush out the antibiotic, and the others modify where the antibiotic goes.

What would happen if you didn't finish a course of antibiotics?

If you stop taking your antibiotic before you complete the course any surviving bacteria developes an immunity to that antibiotic. You must then take a different, usually stronger antibiotic to kill the infection. Once that happens that particular antibiotic usually will not work for any bacterial infection you may get.

Is diazepam used for epilepsy?

It can be used for treating epilepsy, however it is generally not used as a long term treatment for it because people can become resistant to its effects in treating seizures. It can be used for treating epilepsy, however it is generally not used as a long term treatment for it because people can become resistant to its effects in treating seizures. It can be used for treating epilepsy, however it is generally not used as a long term treatment for it because people can become resistant to its effects in treating seizures. It can be used for treating epilepsy, however it is generally not used as a long term treatment for it because people can become resistant to its effects in treating seizures.

What is one advantage of restricting the use of antibiotics?

The germ causing the infection can become resistant ("immune") to the antibiotic, then it will basically make it useless in the fight against that germ.

What does MRSA stand for?

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). Many people mistakenly call it "mersa" but the name is the acronym MRSA.Methicillin is a type of antibiotic---a super strong antibiotic.Resistant means the bacteria (Staph) has developed ways to fight the antibiotic, or "resist" it.Staphylococcus Aureus is the scientific and medical name for the kind of bacteria, often simply referred to as Staph or Staph A.

Which germ is referred to when people talk about the super germ?

"Super Germ", although not a definitive term, is one that is commonly used to describe the dangerous "community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus" (ca-MRSA for short). This "Super Germ" is very dangerous and is resistant to antibiotic treatment.

How can people become resistant to measles or mumps?

They either are vaccinated against those diseases, or they have them and build a natural immunity.

Is there a cure for bacterial diseases?

Yes, antibiotics - which is why people are so worried about folks not taking all of their antibiotics when they do get sick. This makes the bacteria resistant to that antibiotic and eventually it doesn't work on that disease any longer.

Why is bacterial antibiotic resistance a major health concern?

Bacteria live almost everywhere. Our body can co-exist with many kinds called 'healthy bacteria', while we can also fight off many unhealthy bacteria and maintain our well being with our normal immune system. When a bacteria develops resistance to antibiotics; often because it is exposed to an antibiotic but not enough to completely kill it off -- like when someone takes some of their medicine, but doesn't finish it because they start to feel better, or because it is a very common bacteria and antibiotic soap is used all the time until a bacteria comes along or changes so that it can resist it, then our system has a much harder time killing it off and the options we have for treating it become fewer and fewer. Flesh eating disease is one example of a bacteria that has become antibiotic resistant. Many people die or become horribly disfigured by the spread of resistant bacteria before their system overcomes it, or a suitable treatment is found.

Can mersa be treated?

You must be referring to MRSA. Yes it can be treated, but there are new strain with more resistant popping up as people use more antibiotics needlessly for viral infections. Depending on where the infections, you may need IV medications. Often, you may need to be on more than one antibiotics to fight this infection. People also tend to stop taking antibiotics once they start feeling better 'saving' the medications for later. This is a bad idea. Some of the bacteria is still in your body even though you feel better. This allow the remaining bacteria to adapt and sometime become resistant to the antibiotic. So, do not ask your doctor for antibiotic if you have a cold. Most people who thought they have sinus infection actually don't. Most 'pink eye' do not need antibiotic treatments. You should trust your own immune system more and let it does its things.

What is taxim injection used for?

Cefotaxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, used for infections of the respiratory tract, skin, bones, joints, urogenital system, meninges, and bloodstream. This drug is given to people who are penicillin-resistant.

Why can some people not use certain antibiotics?

People get sick from many different types of organisms. Anitbiotics provide effective treatments for most bacterial infections. However, we may get sick from parasites, viruses and/or fungi. Antibiotics won't necessarily be effective at curing these other types of infections.
