When there is a vacuum of vocal, ethical leadership in any human group, the pack mentality sometimes takes over and people don't respond to oppressive behavior by individuals out of fear for themselves.

∙ 13y agoThere is no difference in whether you accept the bullying or not. It is a typical (but not right) response to blame the victim, saying he should change, or fight back, or tell a teacher. Not one of these work, but educating the class about how people are different and discussing how you are with people does work. In addition, parents of bullies should be called in and their child offered special services. In many places (Ie Tomball, TX), a parent of a bully would be able to prevent any acknowledgment of bullying behavior, which helped perpetuate the problem.
In the workplace, bullying is becoming less accepted as there are human resources procedures for large organizations, requiring education, special observation and firing if changes are not made. In smaller organizations, bullying does go on and the only escape is to find a new job. Believe me, if there is a bully in the organization, the boss is not willing to be aware of its occurrence and the victim will be blamed.

because they are scared. in grade 4, i was bullied because of the clothes i wore and they always called me "oscar". it made me sooooo mad that i was crying in the girls bathroom and i didn't have any friends, so.. in grade 5 i started to be more enthusiastic about things and belived in myself and lost lots of weight and people started to like me :D. i ended up being one of the most prettiest and popular girl in school... NO ONE MADE FUN OF ME ANYMORE, but.. i felt like i have lost myself, and started to think i was living for my friends. in grade 6, i lost some of my friends and some of the boys moved on to other girls that copied what i did in grade 5. i started making friends that i loved to be around and the boys i liked and liked me were not stupid to fall for those want-to-be girls that copied me. i am being myself and im still the pretty, kinda popular girl in school. just be yourself. don't look back at the past. be true to yourself :D or you will lose yourself.... take it from a girl that has tons of expeirience. :)

Furthermore, the fear of retaliation is very real and justified. Bullies are often not just psychologically, but physically intimidating, and it's difficult for some to stand up for themselves when there's a fear the consequences will be even worse than before.
The apathy of others is the biggest concern when it comes to counteracting bullying. If others are willing to stand up for the person being bullied, then that person is far more willing to stand up for themselves. But when no one is willing to help, that person ends up alone and afraid. After all, how is someone being bullied expected to react if, say, there's more than one bully, and yet no ones seems to be taking their side?
