In a world where many people may have lost some of their teeth early due to rasslin' wooly mammoths or some such, having a few spare molars grow in after adulthood could be a very useful thing, so your wife didn't have to chew all your food for you.

Due to evolution, human mouths have gotten smaller. Therefore, there is no need for the extra 4 wisdom teeth and there isn't enough room in our mouths. But biologically, the teeth come in and cause discomfort so many people have their teeth taken out.

Wisdom teeth are one of those rare body parts that serve no purpose. They used to, however. Prehistoric man ate meats so tough they made beef jerky look like mashed potatoes. We no longer need the extra teeth to eat such foods, and our mouths have evolved to become smaller, and there is just no room for the extra teeth. If they weren't pulled they would push the other teeth out.

Wisdom teeth also can be impacted -- they are enclosed within the soft tissue and/or the jawbone or only partially break through or erupt through the gum. Partial eruption of the wisdom teeth allows an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and cause an infection, which results in pain, swelling, jaw stiffness, and general illness. Partially erupted teeth are also more prone to tooth decay and gum disease because their hard-to-reach location and awkward positioning makes brushing and flossing difficult. visit Wisdomteethsydney.com.au

This is a common misconception about 3rd Molars (Wisdom teeth). Not every person who's third molars come in will need to have them removed. Sometimes they grow in perfectly normal in alignment and position and therefore do not present a problem.

However, should the molars come in crooked (impacted) or have a high risk of pushing other teeth out of alignment, then they will need to be surgically removed.

The main reason for third molar extraction is because of the reasons listed above, not only can they cause periodontal infections, they can cause other teeth to be pushed out of alignment, causing damage to not only the sockets but nerves.

If a dentist says they should be removed, ask to look at the x-rays, If you see the teeth all the way in the back on top and bottom are sideways or crooked, then he's right. If you notice they are perfectly straight (like your normal molars) then the need for removal can wait.

Wisdom teeth grow just like all other teeth, to provide a way of breaking down food for consumption. They are delayed a few years to allow the mouth to fully grow and other teeth to settle.

Because we we're created with wisdom teeth
Humans developed wisdom teeth early on as a way to grind up the tough meat, vegetables, nuts, and other foods we often ate.
