Its actually the defensive process of the nose. Your body secretes mucus for the inside of your nose. This layer protects the constantly wet area inside the nose and captures foreign material like dust and makes solid matter, Boogers.
Your mucus should be clear or white - if you notice odd colors like red, yellow, or green, it usually means an infection, so you should see a doctor if this happens.

Boogers are essentially good for your nose, but not to eat. Boogers are actually globs of mucus that trap airborne bacteria that is part of the air we breathe. If there are no airborne bacteria or other junk in the air, we wouldn't have boogers. Boogers keep our body healthy by trapping airborne bacteria and other junk in the air that is not needed in the body, which sits in our nasal passages until be blow it out and return it back into the world where it came from.

People have boogers because when you breathe in, all the dirt in the air gets trapped into your boogers so the dirt won't go down your lungs. Snot is also made of tiny particles that are in the air we breathe like germs and pollen. When debris gets trapped in your tiny little nose hairs, it mixes with snot or mucous which can then become a booger. A booger can be wet with mucous, or can become dried.
