For me . . . I think my mind is distracted from the recurring thoughts of the day. The annoying things I can't stop thinking about; I need to tell my coworker he's a jerk, but how . . . How can I save money for the big trip I want this summer . . . What's wrong with my car . . . etc. So the mind has a chance to relax and zonk you're out. That's just my theory.

Reading can trigger a relaxation response in the brain, causing drowsiness. Additionally, the repetitive eye movements involved in reading can be soothing and make you feel sleepy. Lastly, if you're reading in a comfortable position or in a warm environment, these factors can also contribute to making you feel like dozing off.

∙ 15y agowell the reason is sometimes the book is boring. I believe your brain is not being entertained. When you are reading a suspenseful book, you and your brain are being entertained. So, if you are reading a part in a book that is just "mellow", then your brain says "goodnight".
