You have oil for lubrication so the internal parts for example rod bearings cam shaft etc would be metal and soon would over heat and fatiuge and fail also the oil is part of the cooling process of the engine and the oil and filter keeps the internal parts of the engine clean from the residue from the internal combustion
On a 1994 Ford Explorer : You will find the engine oil filter on the passenger side of the 4.0 L V6 engine
