The smoke and heat will move upward. u should crawl so u can see going and if u are standing up you will see lots of smoke and u will not be able to breath Because heat rises and if you stand straight up and take one breath, It can burn your lungs and kill you.

so as soon as they catch on fire they can stop drop and roll

Heat rises. Hot smoke therefore tends to rise. The higher up your head is, the more smoke you will inhale. There is much less smoke the closer you get to the floor, so you will inhale much less smoke by crawling with your head as low as possible.

Mainly because of the smoke. In a fire, you would die from suffocating before you burn.. And the smoke rises so you stay on the floor to avoid breathing in the smoke.

Why do you have to roll yourself in a rug if there is a fire?

The advice to roll yourself in a rug applies if you or your clothing is on fire: the rug will help put out the fire by blocking more oxygen in the air from the fire. If there is no rug immediately handy, drop and roll anyway. The floor and you will help block the air from the flames. If you are not on fire drop and crawl out quickly. Smoke will rise and go to the top of the room so if you're on the floor, it will take longer before the smoke gets down to you and suffocates you.
