You have to go through Jesus Christ because we are sinful and have no right to talk to God, who is holy and sees our sins as filthy rags. But He loved us so much and really wanted to commune with us, so He sent His only son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so that we can come to God with every thing in our lives. He loves it so much when we talk to Him, and He longs for when we turn His way. That's why He sent Jesus to die, so that He could reach down to us.
Jesus is part of the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Different denominations regard communication with God through prayer in various ways. Some see Jesus as primary; others speak with God.
