A SIM card is a small card with a chip on it that contains data pertaining to your network provider and your personal cell phone number. No phone will work adequately without a SIM card; you will only be able to make emergency calls from a phone, even an iPhone 3GS. You will still have to insert your SIM card into your iPhone after a factory shutdown to be able to use the phone to make/receive calls, texts etc.
