The rabies virus has a two week incubation period, meaning it takes two weeks for the the virus to take effect so having the animal vaccinated for rabies immediately after it has been bitten by another animal may prevent the dog from contracting the virus because the vaccine will work before the virus does. To prevent the spread of the rabies virus. This is especially important if the animals have contact to humans. Death occurs in humans between 2-10 days after symptoms occur. Once symptoms occur, there is very little chance of recovery.

Can dog shots be used on cats?

In general, no. Vaccinations (shots) are species specific both because the diseases vaccinated against for dogs don't affect cats and also because vaccines designed for one species are typically not tested for safety in other species. The only vaccine routinely used on multiple species is rabies vaccine and even then it needs to be approved for use in any species to be vaccinated with it.

"Veterinary biologics" is a fancy way of saying "vaccine", particularly in reference to a live attenuated vaccine. Veterinarians use vaccines to protect animals from either contracting a disease (rabies) or to provide enough of an immune system boost to the animal that the animal doesn't get severely ill from the disease.

What do you put on a dog when you take it for a walk?

You can put on a dog a collar with a leash clipped on to it or you can use a harness around it's chest. It really depends on the behavior of the dog. Some times you might need a muzzle to keep the dog from biting other people and dogs. If the dog is strong and pulls you around you don't want to use the harness because you will not have the dog's attention. Also you can use a pinch collar to control the determined dog.

Why the cat need to be vaccinated?

A kitten requires a series of shots. The first is the feline distemper, sometimes refered to as FVRCP. These are given in a series with 2 shots about 3-4 weeks apart. The FVRCP is repeated annually. Vaccines for feline leukemia and feline aides are important if the cat goes outside. These vaccines are given in a series of 2 to bolster immunity in the the first year, then annually. Rabies is given annually begining at 16 wks old. New recommendations are first shots at 9 weeks old. Rabies after 20 weeks. USE ONLY NON ADJUVANTED rabies. You do not vaccinate for anything (except rabies by law) after the kitten shots. (a series of 2, four weeks apart).
