The most common fly to be found in the home (and subsequently the one which eats our food!) is the Musca domestica, or Common House Fly. As this fly can only eat liquid food they will ‘spit’ out saliva onto solid foods to aid in pre-digestion. Also due to their high intake of food they almost constantly deposit faecal matter. This coupled with the ‘vomiting’ increases your chances of coming into contact with the diseases they carry. Flies can also carry diseases ‘picked up’ from contact with infected humans, such as Typhoid or Polio. As well as the above, Flies can also cause/spread Diarrhoea, vomiting, anthrax, cholera, eye-infections… That’s why we cover our food!
