Why do you use controls in experiments?

Say doctors want to test whether peanuts boost memory. They call in two groups of people with average memory skills. The two groups are given the following meals

Group 1: grazed peanut with chicken sandwich with tea.

Group 2: Chicken sandwich with tea.

The second group is a control for the experiment as it proves that it is the peanuts that are causing the boost in memory(if the results are positive).
