The scientific method is beneficial for a variety of reasons. Some of these are:

  • The steps are clear, so the experiment can always be repeated
  • Experiments are controlled
  • Allows the results and work to speak for itself
  • Has a clear objective and minimizes bias

Maybe because they do not believe in divine inspiration, are socially incompetent and want to isolate themselves in a lab, are curious about how things really are, want to do something worhwhile? The scientific method consists of formulating a hypothesis, testing it by suitable technical means, controlling variables that may influence the outcome, subjecting results to peer review, and replication by other scientists. Although science requires study of preceding work, it does not depend on a special relationship to "divine" powers. It is democratic, open to anyone with the interest, courage, tenacity, skill, inspiration, political connections, and money required to pursue research.

The reason you use scientific methods as guidelines is to help you get your answer. If some one wants to do the same experiment as you did they can see what you did and do it again for their reults. and if their results don't some what match up with yours than they know that they did something wrong.

Because - in contrast to other methods - it works.

Addition: Scientists are persons who enquire about the nature of the world and the universe.

Karl Popper suggested in "Conjectures & Refutations" that a theory is scientific only if it is testable. And in testing the theory, one should try to DISPROVE it, not prove it. Once disproved, the theory must be modified and retested. If the theory is utterly wrong, it should be abandoned.
