Physical exercise keeps muscles healthy by stimulating them and increasing blood flow to the fibers. To maintain muscle size, they just need to be stimulated regularly.

To increase muscle mass, something else has to happen. The muscle fibers need to be stimulated to the point where they start to crack and tear. The gaps then fill in with muscle fiber making them bigger. The pain you feel is inflammation of newly torn fibers. Inflammation is usually harmless but if it is in the joints in can be destructive. It's not the inflammation that causes the muscles to grow so anti-inflammatory drugs can reduce the pain and damage to the joints.

It is simple really, tiny microscopic tears that occur in the muscle as a result of high intensity exercise (such as weight training, intense cycling, etc). After the workout, the muscle begins to rebuild itself (provided it is allowed enough time and nutrients to recover). This is the rebuilding process which creates new muscle that is bigger and stronger than before. In other words, your muscles are growing. Your muscles grow when you are at rest - not when you're at the gym.

This is called Delayed Onset Muscle Sorenesss (DOMS). It's the discomfort that you feel 1-3 days after a good workout. When you put stres on your muscles, they break down and grow larger and stronger. As a result, your nerves are put under more pressure than normal, which is the cause of the pain.

The old adage is, the higher the intensity in breaking down muscle fibers when training a muscle, the longer time it will take to recouperate. Advance students of training typically need to rest up to a week between training a specific muscle group. The propensity to train with high intensity as a beginner is less than an advanced subject, however if you push the muscle beyond the scope of allowing it to recover within a 48 to 72 hr time frame, you will create such a breakdown that it will require a much longer recovery time period. Beginners who attempt to train in this manner before they have built a foundation for their ligaments and tendons, will also run the risk of a higher rate of injury not to mention an inability to move the specific muscle area without grave discomfort for several days. To sum up, if you are a beginner and the muscle is sore for 5 days, you overtrained it!

Because basically when you work out or lift a heavy weight, what you are doing is stretching the muscles inside your skin, and ripping them. As the muscles rip, they heal over a quick bit of time and form a new layer. This may make your muscles or the rest of your arm feel a bit sore or may make your arm hurt. This toughens your muscles and makes then appear larger because of the new layer.

Your muscles are sore after a workout because of a couple possibilities. One of the reasons that your muscles could be sore after a light workout is because of improper preperation. Meaning you might not have stretched correctly, for long enough, or maybe even not at all. Your muscles need to be stretched and prepared for any type of workout, whether it be a vigorous straining workout, cardio, or just plain walking and jogging. On a light workout, if you stretch properly and prepare for the workout you shouldn't really feel any type of soreness, you should only feel maybe a tiredness and/or tightness in your muscles. On a more vigorous workout on the other hand, like bench presses, hard cardio, weight training, or any type of body building or body sculpting workout. Even with proper stretching your muscles can feel very sore, tired, and burn deep within the muscle. This soreness comes from when you're working out with weights in weight training, you muscles are actually have a lot of little tears that are normal which brings the pain of soreness. You muscles tear when youre body building and you get the soreness and the burning sensation and it makes room within the muscle to grow more muscle to fill in the tears. Only little tiny tears are normal, bigger tears in a muscle with be very painful and is considered an injury. You only want the little tears the build the muscle bigger and stronger. After a workout it is very important to rest and intake a lot of portions of protein. This very important nutrient is used by the muscle to nourish and fill in the spaces created by the little tears to build the muscle bigger. As long as your muscles are not too sore to the point that you can't stand it and the pain doesn't last more than a day or two, sometimes three to four days for beginners than it is normal and not an injury. That's why your muscles can feel sore and tired feeling after a workout, but it's a good thing, with the soreness, and tightness feeling in your muscles, you know that you're on the right track and building muscle. Keep working out and building muscle and remember to just have fun with it. Don't injure yourself!!!
