Could be too much compression for the fuel being used, or maybe the timing is too far advanced.

The 1970 engine had higher compression, but the big difference is in the way horsepower was calculated. In actuality, the 1970 was only a little more powerful than the 1977.

Never heard of a 350 big block Chevy. There was a 348, discontinued around 1963, and a 366, which was only used in larger trucks.
