he had a brain anuerysm in college, so he had to wear the helmet. he doesn't need to wear it anymore, but he's used to it so he keeps wearing it.

Before his professional playing days, John Olerud had surgery which required the placement of a metal plate in his head. He wears the hard helmet at all times for protection. Foul balls are often hit into the dugout. John is allowed by MLB to wear his batting helmet while playing defensively to protect from an injury he received early in his career.

That distinction goes to George Owen, Boston Bruins defenseman. He had played football while in college and when he entered the NHL in 1928 he wore the same leather helmet that he had worn in college when playing football.

To help protect the head from injury due to the violent collisions that occur while playing the game.

There really is no need to wear a helmet if you're just watching. Foul balls do sometimes pop over fences, but most parks have nets and it is unlikely you will get hit by a ball. If you are playing, it is necessary to wear a helmet while batting.

First, I assume the question is really..."Do you salute the American flag while you are wearing a bicycle helmet?" If the helmet is part of a uniform, you salute. If it's not, you take the helmet off and hold it over your heart. Second, if the question is..."Do you salute a bicycle helmet with an American flag on it?" then the answer is no.
