This has so long been a mystery that we even have a myth of Cupid who sends arrows of love into people randomly, since he is blindfolded. As Shakespeare has Helena say in Midsummer Night's Dream, "Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; And therefore is wing'd Cupid painted blind"
