because something is amiss. Go to Autozone and ask them to run the codes. That will tell you whats wrong and what needs attention. The first time mine came on was at 100,000 miles. Was due to a worn gas cap. It's an emissions problem and you can take it to the dealer (any dealer) and they should fix it for free. '97 civcs have a 150k mile emissions warranty so it shouldn't cost you anything. My light came on and that's what it was. I had the catalitic converter & O2 sensor replaced for free along with a full tune up and oil change for free. This was at 97.5k miles too. Check it out.
