Why does a 1997 mercury mountaineer start in neutral and not park?

The shift interlock mechanism probably needs to be repaired. The owners manual probably gives instructions for temporarily overriding this, but it would be best to have it repaired.

Your 1997 Mercury Mystique won't start has no spark but has power to the coil on the center pin?
If its causing you the trouble its giving me my suggestion would be to roll it into the middle of the road scrap it or burn the bloody thing.

1997 i30 infinity has power starter is good but still wont start or turn over any ideas was told possibly bank sensor is that a part and if so will it cause the car to not start?
Mine was the starter on 1996 I30. I downloaded the schematic diagrams for the electrical system. I took out fuse #17 (10 Amp) which basically shut down the anti-theft (start) and it still didn't start. After checking that fuse #33 (7.5 Amp) was good, I replaced the starter and it's working fine. The only other thing it could be is the inhibitor switch (Park or Neutral switch) so try both positions and if it doesn't start in either Park or Neutral, it's probably the starter unless you have a stick instead of an automatic. In stick shifts, there is another switch linked to the clutch...that can stop it from starting.
