Evolutionary theory is that dolphins were a land animal which returned to the sea some millions of years ago. They can breathe on the surface because they have a blowhole which allows them to breathe air. They cannot survive for long out of water because their physiology requires that they be suspended in water and because their skin dries out quickly.

Dolphins are mammals, like ourselves, only they do not have legs. Since they are mammals, they can not breathe underwater, so they have a blowhole on top of their heads, near their neck. Dolphins are able to hold their breath for such a long time, it seems as if the live underwater. This goes for any type of whales or porpoises.

Blue whales are massive and have adapted to live in the water. Water provides extra support for them, as their bodies are not designed to hold that much weight on land.
