There are lots of different reasons. Some because they are hungry or have infections. And others because they think they hear something or maybe they are lonely or something. We have a poodle and when we make howling noises at her she does it back and if we interrupt her while she is howling, She does it even louder and she does it longer. And we also have a beagle that we go off of the road a couple of days ago and he howls an awful lot and I think the reason he howls is because it is his nature to howl. All he does is howl and sleep so maybe it's because he was just born to howl.

∙ 15y agoDogs are pack animals and social. When a dog is left alone it voices its concern at being left out of pack activities. Dogs can get used to being left alone for short periods. When your dog howls when you are away it is actually reminding you that you have forgotten it.

∙ 13y agoThere are many reasons why your dog may be crying. I'm guessing that there are no obvious injuries on your dog, but that doesn't mean your dog isn't in pain. If your dog is whining or howling then it is probably feeling unwell or in some pain/discomfort.
Another reason your dog may be crying is simply because it wants attention. Your dog may also be crying because it is hungry, thirsty or wants to go outside. If you have fed and watered your dog and let it out, then it is obviously crying for another reason. If your dog continues to cry for days on end, then the best thing to do would be to take it to the vet to make sure your dog isn't unwell.

∙ 7y agoDogs don't howl for no reason. It might appear to you there is no reason but the dog has a reason.
Maybe the dog is lonely, some dogs howl when they hear a siren of some kind, some dogs howl when they see the moon.
