It appears broken because of the reflection of the object and it's from the other molecules hitting the water which causes a bend like appearance to happen the light bends.the light bending is called refraction.

∙ 15y agoThe spoon cools the hot water slightly just before it hits the glass. It's just enough to keep the glass from cracking from localized thermal expansion. Thermal shock on the glass is reduced slightly and spread out over time. It would be similar to hitting the glass with a metal hammer versus a rubber mallet.

∙ 14y agoWhen we pour very hot water into an empty glass, the inner surface of the glass will expand as matter expands when heated. But the inner surface of the glass will expand more than the outer surface of the glass because more heat is applied to the inner surface of the glass. Thus , causing uneven expansion and the cracking of the glass. Hence, when a metal spoon is placed in the glass, it helps to conduct the heat quickly away, and to prevent it from cracking.

∙ 13y agoIt cracks as the inner layer expands more quickly than the outer layer and will push the outer layer and it will crack. When you put a metal spoon in it, the heat will be conducted away from the spoon to the surrounding as metal has a good conductor of heat due the the freely moving electrons and thus the glass inner surface will not expand so quickly and will not crack

It will crack because like clay in a hot oven, if all the spots are not covered correctly, it will have a chance of cracking, but when the hot water gets into the crack, it will start to make it bigger. If the expansion is uneven, the glass will break and I don't understand why it won't break with a metal spoon.
