Pop cleans pennies because it has a concentration of acid.

Dirty pennies are coated with a layer of copper oxide. The acid will react with the copper oxide, dissolving it. Acids used to clean pennies are not strong enough to react with copper itself.

it is because the acidity in the soda melts the dirt off witch is equivelent to coke cleaning a penny

They collect them, and some, like a 1943 copper penny, are worth a lot of money. Most pennies are only worth a penny, but, some are worth a lot more than than to a collector.
