This is because the sound waves from noise made in the room are absorbed by the carpet instead of being bounced back (or echoing).

it does this because sound waves collide with the carpet fibers, and because the carpet is a "rough" surface, it scatters the sound waves to the point where hardly any of them travels towards your ears
