This synthesis reaction produces Copper(II) nitrate(bluish-green), Water and Nitrogen Dioxide(reddish-yellow). Nitrogen dioxide is produced only if the acid is concentrated.

Copper + (Conc.)Nitric acid ----> Copper(II) nitrate + Water + Nitrogen dioxide

Cu + 2HNO3 ----> Cu(NO3)2 + H2O + NO2

NOTE: If the gas coming out is colourless, it is not Nitrogen dioxide, i.e. it is Nitrogen monoxide. This also means that your acid is not concentrated. Nitrogen monoxide is only produced when the acid is dilute. This is the equation:

Copper + (Dil.)Nitric acid ----> Copper(II) nitrate + Water + Nitrogen monoxide

Cu + HNO3 ----> Cu(NO3)2 + H2O + NO

yep. you can boil the sulfuric acid and it will dissolve copper. It releases sulfur dioxide gas however, so do the experiment in a fumehood or outside, and please do not have any hydrogen peroxide near by, as sulfur dioxide gas, SO2 will combine with hydrogen peroxide to form more sulfuric acid(h2S04)

There is lots of fizzing and bubbling and a brown gas (nitric oxide- very toxic) is given off. Eventually the copper dissolves and a greenish solution of copper nitrate is left.
