It's more efficient, and less is lost, when electric power is shipped from place to

place at high voltage ... much higher than what's eventually supplied to homes.

So it's shipped cross-country at extremely high voltages, and then Transformers

are used to step it down somewhat for local distribution, and then again to step it

down just before it goes into houses.
