In sodium oxide there are two sodium atoms for each oxygen, formula is Na2O. The reason is that oxygen has a valency of 2 and sodium has a valency of one. They form an ionic compound with two Na+ ions to each O2- . In both of these different sorts of ions the outer electron shell is the same as a noble gas--sodium loses one electron to get the outer shell configuration of Neon and oxygen gains two electrons to get the outer shell configuration of Neon .

A hydrogen atom needs to gain 1 electron to achieve a stable outer shell of 2 electrons. It gets. In covalent compounds like H2O it gets this by "sharing" electrons with another atom like oxygen.

Oxygen, needs to gain 2 electrons to achieve its own stable outer shell of 8 valence (outer shell) electrons. It gets this in the same way by "sharing" with another atoms such as hydrogen.

In a single bond like those in H20 each atom gives one electron to be "shared" between the two atoms.

Well, shells are materials that hold electrons in place, and the first shell can hold 2 electrons, and the next one can hold 8. Let me show you the reason:

1 molecule of oxygen contains 8 electrons, and 1x8=8.

So so far we have eight, with fills the first shell, but the second one is still one-quarter empty.

Now, one molecule of hydrogen has 1 electron, and 1x2=2.

And now, 2+8=10, which fills both shells, because:

The first shell can hold 2 electrons, and the second one can hold 8 electrons. Which equals to:

10!

And now that it is full, it creates a chemical reaction.

In order for both hydrogen atoms and the oxygen atom to have a filled valence shell of electrons, they must form covalent bonds with one another. The oxygen atom forms a covalent bond with each of the hydrogen atoms. When combining with oxygen, each hydrogen atom has two valence electrons, and the oxygen atom has eight valence electrons. By having filled valence shells, the atoms become stable.
