Why does mankind like babies so much?

It is believed that animals are 'programmed' to want to reproduce and keep the species alive. Many women have what is called a 'maternal instinct', which means that they like to look after people and things that cannot look after themselves, like babies, pets, maybe even plants to a certain extent. This also extends to men (that would be called 'paternal instinct') and animals - a cat has an instinct to look after its kittens like a human mother has an instinct to look after her babies. Also, baby humans and animals typically have features that human beings find appealing - like round faces. That was the psychology answer. The other answer is that when a baby is born it makes the baby's parents and family, and their friends, very happy because there is a new person to get to know and who we can enjoy life with, and who will teach us about life and ourselves by the things they do and the questions they ask. That baby was born because two people love each other and that's a wonderful thing to celebrate.
