As the mother's age increases, the risk of having a baby with Down's syndrome also increases. In particular, women aged 35 and older have a significantly higher risk of having a child born with Down's. At age 30, for example, a woman has about a 1 in 900 chance of conceiving a child with Down's. The risk increases to about 1 in 350 for a who is aged 35, and to about 1 in 100 for a woman who is aged 40.

Down's syndrome (also called Trisomy 21) is typically caused when the baby receives an extra chromosome (chromosome #21) at conception - so instead of receiving 23 chromosomes from the father and 23 chromosomes from the mother for a total of 46 chromosomes, the baby receives 47 chromosomes. It is this extra genetic material that causes the physical features and delayed development associated with Down's.

*I am not sure*

age affects the baby, sometimes, because as the women grows older, the eggs she produces also get older. and the older the egg is, more chances of the baby to have Down syndrome. hope it helps:)

See the Related link for a table that lists a woman's age in conjunction with the statistical likelihood of her giving birth to a baby with Down syndrome.

Our users comment:

  • I believe I read that, at my age (32), I have 1:750 chance of having a child with Down syndrome. I was one of those 750 women... the likelihood increases as the mother ages, especially after age 30.

(See the Related question on the odds of giving birth of a child with Down syndrome.)

As a woman gets older, her eggs start to break down and wear out. This is the reason that she is more likely to have a child with Down Syndrome as she ages.

Age. As you grow older, the chance of you having a baby with a chromosomal abnormality increases, though it can happen to anyone.

The reason that older age of the mother will increase the risk of Down syndrome in babies is because older eggs have more of a chance of chromosomes not dividing properly.
