The OD light flashing is an indicator of an electrical failure in the transmission. Get it fixed now or replace the tranny later.

Get it checked out. You have an electrical problem. Most likely a short. Overdrive is basically a "Higher Gear" allowing the wheels to spin faster than the engine, which increases fuel effeciency. If this is out, you will only get to use the next lowest gear. I have a 6 speed automatic. Which means, I could only use up to fifth. If yours is a 5 speed auto, then you can only use up to fourth gear.
