Sexism exists because of many things. In my opinion both science and religion have a lot to do with this. Science would tell you that men are physically more capable than women are. They are bigger and stronger and therefore have the potential to do more physical work than a woman could. Physical strength since the ancient times was needed far more than any thing else a woman could provide except child birth and care obviously (to keep the population stimulated). Women are seen as weaker than men because they lack the natural physical strength that a man has and the aggression that a man has. Women also tend to lack the territoriality that a man carries supposedly from birth. For example, if a man thinks that something belongs to him he will continuously protect it and defend it from others. If caught in the line of hostility a man is more likely to quickly become more aggressive while a woman would retreat. Religion plays into this sexism because god created a man, Adam, first. Eve, the woman was made from man and therefore is inferior to the man for without him she would not have been created. Religion allows for the sexism to exist because God for one is a man, the one allowed to save all of humanity was a man, all priests are men, most deacons are men as well. The man is continuously throughout religion far more useful than the woman is. There are instances where the woman becomes heavily important an example being Mary.
