Our skin has cells called melaninocytes which produce melanin, a pigment, made in response to sunlight. Many people have many cells and they have darker skin. Their families are from areas which have direct sunlight for most days.

Others have backgrounds from areas which don't get much sunlight. These people have lighter skin which they need so that they can use sunlight to produce Vitamin D.

Anyone who has melaninocytes will produce darker skin with an increase sunlight. If done carefully, darker skin will prevent burning.

The only people unable to make melanin are albinos.

Why does exposure to the sun cause skin to darken?

It is melanin, produced by melanocytes, that causes the skin to darken which is found on the skin's epidermis. Overproduction or underproduction of melanin results to skin discoloration. That is the reason why too much sun exposure results to skin darkening - when melanocytes produce more melanin (hyperpigmentation) than they should, they turn into freckles or moles. For additional information about skin care, please check the Sources and related links section.
