Well there are 2 things bothering Soda when he runs out. One of them is because of Darry and Pony's constant fighting, but the other is Sandy and Soda's situation.
(For those who don't know what happened between Soda and Sandy, look below)
At the beginning of the book, Soda tells Pony that he wants to marry Sandy after Pony graduates.
Later on, we discover that "it wasn't Soda" which is hard to understand at first, but what can be discovered is that what REALLY happened is that:
Sandy got knocked up by another guy (not Sodapop)
Soda didn't care and wanted to marry her (because it is frowned apon back then to have kids out of wedlock)
Sandy's parents didn't want her to marry a 17 year old kid, so she got sent to Florida to live with her grandmother until the baby was born.
So Soda had lost the love of his life and will never see her again.

Every time darry and ponyboy have a fight they want soda to take their side. Soda does not want to take either side because he loves them both equally. They play tug of war because they want back up from him and sense soda is the only other family member left he gets stuck in the middle a lot. For example in the book and in the movie (the outsiders the complete novel) the three of them are sitting down to dinner when darry and pony get into one of their arguments. darry says his thing and pony get mad and asks soda, "Is that not right Soda?"
