Or maybe it has something to do with his shoes and the various amounts of energy he can take out of the THOUSANDS if not MILLIONS of rings he's collected over the years.

In the first Sonic game, it came from his shoes, called Power Sneakers.

This idea was abandoned when Sonic was seen wearing different shoes but running just as fast.
