If the light comes on then everything is not fine. You need to have this looked at by a professional, before you do damage to this engine. Overheating is serious in modern engines that run hot in the first place. The car is 9 years old, and it is time for a complete cooling system service, if it has not been done. Drain, and flush coolant, replace thermostat, and install a fresh supply of a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water, and finally bleed the system to remove all trapped air. Be sure and check all hoses, and replace as necessary. Check the operation of the cooling fan, and clean the exterior of the radiator fins. And finally if all is indeed fine, then take a look at the temperature gage sending unit. It may be defective.
if the car is not overheating it can be the coolant senser.More info is needed to give you a more accurate answer, are you loseing coolant?does your engine backfire ?have you checked your thermostat?
