In short, the Nile River,or any other river, will overflow its banks as there the amount of water in its channels exceeds the river's capacity to hold water. This can be caused by several reasons, such as excessive rainfall and the reduce in vegetation that flanks the river.

Excessive rainfall will lead to a huge volume of water/rain entering the Nile River. If the amount of water/rain entering the river exceeds the river's capacity to hold water, the Nile will overflow its banks and floods will occur.

Reduce in vegetation cover that flanks the nile river will result in less interception of the rainwater. This will result in more surface runoff, which eventually reaches the Nile. As such, this will lead to the overflowing of the Nile's banks when the amount of surface runoff exceeds that of the river's capacity.
