the parking brake is either sticking or the sensor is bad This could also be a warning that there is something wrong with the braking system. The light is not only for the parking brake in most vehicles.
The check engine light is on because the ECU has detected a problem with the emissions system. The brake light can be on because there is a problem with the brake system. Can be as simple as the parking brake has not been fully released or the master cylinder is low of brake fluid. Have the ECU scanned with an OBD2 scan tool which will retrieve the code that has been set. This code will tell you what part of the emissions system is being effected.
It could be one of serveral things. - Low brake fluid. - Parking brake is on or slightly on. - If the brake pedal has been pushed all the way to the floor. Check the fluid and parking brake first then go to plan B.
because it does
you need to check the switch on parking brake try to unplug
Loose contacts or your sensor may be stuffed - see an auto electrician
If the handbrake light stays on when handbrake is off the easiest thing to check first is the brake fluid level. The light was on for a month on my '96 Corolla before I noticed the low brake fluid level. After topping the fluid up the light no longer came on while driving. Note that you should only use freshly opened brake fluid - stuff that has been open for a while will have absorbed moisture from the air reducing its effectiveness. If the brake fluid level is OK then the handbrake cable probably needs adjusting (probably loosening) so the light does not come on too soon, or stay on when it shouldn't. Another possibility is the parking brake engagement sensor, a mechanical switch that is engaged when the parking brake lever is activated. It may have gotten stuck in the on position and need to be cleaned or replaced.
a likely fuel pump failure HAS THE PARKING BRAKE BEEN WORKED ON RECENTLY?= THERE IS A GROUND WIRE FOR THE FUEL PUMP SECURED TO THE PARKING BRAKE MOUNTING BOLT ON THE UPPER (DASH MOUNTED END OF THE PARKING BRAKE LEVER) IF THE NUT SECURING THE GROUND WIRE IS LOOSE THE FUEL PUMP WILL NOT OPERATE. THIS CAN BE AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM.
It means that the traction control system is disabled. You may have manually switched it off, or the parking brake may not be fully released, or there is a fault detected in the system and a scan tool will be required to learn what fault has been detected.
some where along the parking brake cable is an adjusting nut. Loosen the nut and then lock it back in place with the other nut.
FYI - I had a bad alternator. Apparently, a failed alternator may/can/will cause the battery AND brake warning lamps to come on. Alternator has been replaced, and all warning lamps cleared.
Remove the Phillips screw under the hood holding the parking light in place.Tug on the parking light and it should easily come out.Video of this process has been included below.
check the wires at brake light switch on brake pedal they are bad about breaking brake light switch
