check the alternator
yes if the alternator isnt charging the battery correctly then it couldnt be sending ecu false signals when my alternator was playing up , my central locking my hazards interior light and rear wiper stopped working
bad alternator ? its not charging the battery
I had the same problem...the alternator went bad. Both the alternator and battery had to be replaced.
Sounds like an electrical problem, check your battery, alternator, and fuse box, and light wiring.
I just went through this with my Windstar - stopped by my favorite Autozone and they did a pretty thorough electrical test, including the alternator and battery. Most of the auto parts stores offer free testing. Easiest thing to do is remove the positive connection to your battery if you Freestar stalls....Alternator is no good(just happened to me)
Find a volt meter, check the battery voltage with the engine stopped, it should be a around 12 V. Now start the engine and the voltage should be around 13.5 V. If the alternator isn't putting out about 13.5 (+/- .5 V) the replacment alternator could be bad or you might have a bad connection somewhere.
Same thing happened to me. Replaced the battery & the light went out for a couple weeks; after which it was back on again. This time I took it to the shop & they said the alternator was about to go. I didn't want to "fix" something that was "about to go" so I drove it for about 10 more days before the alternator stopped putting out enough juice to keep the car running or battery charged. Took the car back in & paid to have the alternator replaced. Guess they were right b/c it has worked just fine since. Good luck. It sounds like your alternator is about to go. Had same problem with mine. Also abs,tcs and e-brake light would come on when speedometer stopped working. Turned out alternator was putting out 16v. Replaced alternator and battery. Solved problem. Replaced both speed sensors first did not help. Good luck
This happened to me as well. Don't forget to re-charge the battery as well. Since the belt broke you probably can assume that the alternator stopped charging the battery at least for a moment.
Get a new starter...lol.
I actually was suprised my grand prix was squealing and it was the alternator. I got it replaced and it has stopped.
My alternator stopped recharging my battery but I can't take the tension off my serpentine belt to put my alternator back on.
I drove mine today, it was fine while the battery had over 9 or 10 volts, but once the battery died, the car (4WD, mitsu challenger) started driving poorly, and then stopped when I pulled over. Not sure if I did any damage yet. If it is a SI (Spark ignition) engine then you can drive so long as the battery has sufficient charge. A CI (Compression ignition) engine does not rely on an electrical ignition and will drive without the alternator or battery.
Check for poor ground connection either at the alternator or follow the negative cable coming from the battery.
There is a good chance that your alternator has stopped working. It could also be just a loose wire from the alternator to the battery that is not letting the battery charge. Also it could be a bad battery. When a cell in a battery dies it will hold a charge for a short period of time but then rapidly die. Get the battery checked first. they the wires, then the alternator.
Either your battery is dead and wont accept a charge or your alternator has stopped charging the battery due to a blown fuse, loose or damaged wiring, loose or broken drive belt or the alternator itself has gone bad.
Since it is shutting down while it is running that tells me your alternator is not putting out enough current and needs replaced. You will need to charge the battery fully prior to starting after installing the new alternator or you could burn out the new alternator as well. I.King
If your 2001 Jeep Commander randomly stopped working and won't turn on, you likely have one of two problems. Your battery is dead, or your alternator is dead.
Your alternator has either stopped working or is putting out less than 14 volts, therefore not enough charge is getting to your battery.
CAUTION!!! This may be a problem with the alternator and the charging. Blower fan will stop working if alternator is not charging. You may also see the battery light and brake light staying on as well! Advance Auto Parts or Auto-zone can test your alternator/battery.
YES ! ! ! next you know you will be stranded trying to get a jumper it doesnt work until you replace either alternator and battery[both].
A very good chance the fan ( alternator ) drive belt has broken Depending on what engine is in your vehicle, the water pump has probably stopped turning which will increase the temperature of the engine. Also the alternator will have stopped turning, illuminating the no charge warning light.
