Why do plant cells have chloroplasts but animal cells do not?

Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the chemical needed for photosynthesis - using energy from the sun with carbon dioxide to make sugar. Plants need this because it is their only energy source (with some exceptions such as venus fly traps)

Animals eat plants or other animals, and so do not need to conduct photosynthesis as they have another energy source. If there is no need to photosynthesise there is no point in making chloroplasts.

The formula for the same is 6 CO2 + 6 H2O (+ energy.) = C 6 H 12 O 6. Thousands of such glucose molecules are combined to form starch. So plant manufacture there own food for there own use and liberate oxygen to air. Animals eat the plants and get the energy by combustion of glucose. This glucose is obtained by 'digesting' the starch. Animals do not have chloroplast as they do not manufacture there own food but obtain it from plants. The use the glucose and give the carbon bi oxide back to plants. The formula is C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 = 6 C O 2 + 6 H 2 O (+energy.). This energy is exactly same as consumed from sun light. As animals do not manufacture there own food, they do not require chloroplast. This is also called as carbon cycle.
