It is the basis for how our metabolism works. Our bodies get energy by reacting the oxygen we breathe in with sugar and fat from food. Sugar and fat are compounds of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen and will react with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water.
Actually, we breathe in oxygen from the air which is furnished by green plants, and when the oxygen cycles through our system, it is converted to carbon dioxide which is what plants need. It is like a mutual relationship between animals and the plants. We produce the carbon dioxide, they give us the oxygen and it doesn't get oxygen from the plant
We inhale air into our lungs where our blood picks up oxigen and carries it (along with other nutrients) to our cells for the metabolic process. The blood exchanges the oxigen for carbon dioxide, a bi-product of the work the cells do, and carry it to our lungs and exchange it for oxigen again. Our lungs expell air, now saturated with carbon dioxide.
Our metabolism is based on a process from cellular respiration. Oxygen from the air reacts with sugar that we get from food to produce water and carbon dioxide. This reaction releases energy that our bodies can use.
Human metabolism consumes oxygen and produces carbon dioxide. Thus, it requires a constant supply of oxygen, and it constantly emits carbon dioxide. The respiratory system makes this possible.
inhaling and exhaling
The process is called Cellular Respiration.
Check The Carbon Cycle...
Humans inhale both and exhale both, however all Co2 is exhaled and only some O2 is exhaled.
Respiratory system
The respiratory system is responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the environment.

Lungs
Respiratory gas exchange is the diffusion of both carbon dioxide and oxygen from the capillaries to the alveoli in our lungs, and vice versa.
Respiratory system.
To let you breathe...the exchange of carbon dioxide (waste) for oxygen (not waste).
respiratory system
The main function of the respiratory system is the exchange of gases. It brings in oxygen and elmiinates carbon dioxide.
