Vegetation is sparse but existant because

  • The annual rainfall is low.
  • The ground is often frozen below a depth of 25 cm (10 in) so only small shrubs can grow.
  • The summer growing period is very short.
  • Winds are often strong.
  • However, the frozen subsoil allows water to remain on the surface, often in marshes, and
  • Evaporation is also minimal.

The tundra is a very harsh cold environment with a short growing season. The temperature is a big factor in reduced biodiversity, since the bulk of animals that cannot maintain their own body temperatures have to also have a very rapid reproductive cycle.

Animals that can maintain their own body temperature with a large body mass are more successful in this type of environment but the limited availability of plant life requires migration and reduces the number of large herivores that can survive to

a few species.

What is the climate for the plains?

sunnyMost of the Great Plains region has a semiarid climate, with a wide range of temperature and little rainfall. The semiarid climate does not provide enough precipitation to support trees in much of the region where the natural vegetation is mostly grassland, but in northern regions the summers are short and cool and the sparse precipitation is enough to support a coniferous forest.

How does vegetation affect climate?

Vegetation affects the climate primarily through transpiration. If the area contains a large number of trees and vegetation, it has the most amount of precipitation as rain. For e.g the Amazon rain forest has extremely dense vegetation. Because of this it rains almost everyday. And places which can support vegetation but don't have any are likely to become deserts if they are not preserved quickly enough. And places with dense vegetation are more cooler in summer but are extremely humid

Why are there desert regions?

Deserts are regions which receive such low levels of precipitation (rain) that there is not enough water for many types of plants to live there.
