wolves don't specifically howl to the moon. They don't think "hey there's a moon! I'm going to howl to it".
People normally think they howl to the moon because they usually howl at night. But that's because wolves are nocturnal. They are awake during the day time as well and do sleep at night sometimes. But they normally hunt at night. This, i do not know why.
Wolves howl to communicate and when they are hunting communicating is very important.

∙ 13y agoThey might not be necessarily howling at the moon, as when they turn into their wolf forms the wolf side takes over so they'll probably just be howling anyway, probably to get attention of other werewolves or animals attention.
