Your 90 Ford Tempo may die when you put it in drive or reverse because the fuel filter is clogged. The transmission could also be malfunctioning.
Lock up torque converter prolem.
Coolant could be low, causing the engine to overheat. There are also a number of things that could cause overheating and the engine to shut off. Plus the ford tempo was an unsound car from the get go/
check the speed sensor
tork converter lock is engaged.
The idling speed could be set too low.
I would check the idle air solenoid on the intake manifold

If you mean a Rotated Reverse Die? No this is not common.
check the distributor cap. if it has a micro crack it will expand when the engine heats up then after cooling down retract allowing the car to run. had this problem on my 1970 camaro
