There are two reasons for your computer to make so much noise...

1) YOUR HARD DRIVE, which consists of spinning magnetic disks and a head that reads the information, just like a turntable with a record.

The information is permanently stored in these magnetic disks, which is read as random access memory (RAM) from there. What you are hearing, is most likely the mechanics of the drive. Some drives are quieter than others. Newer models (typically later than 2005) are a bit quieter, as the drives are becoming more and more advanced as time passes each year and new models are brought to the market. However, there are plenty of factors that contribute to your hard drive becoming compromised or having to work harder.

As you install various extra programs, process more information, use more programs and applications, access more info that requires the use of certain programs, etc., you will probably notice this noise.

2) ANOTHER NOISE you may hear is THE FAN THAT COOLS YOUR PROCESSOR. Programs that use a lot of processing power (which are quit a lot of programs out there) will cause the processor to heat up, as it is processing information, at which point the fan that cools the processor will usually kick in to cool it down, so you might also hear that when you're doing some serious number crunching. This is a good thing. You need this for optimal CPU and Hard Drive health. Just as it's important to keep your car from over heating.

Another reason for excessive noise from the FAN that cools your processor may be that it is dusty. Just like a ceiling fan collects dust, so does a processor-fan. Simply have that cleaned or do it yourself on a regular basis (once every few months is fine) and you should see (or hear, lol) a difference in the amount of noise you fan makes.
Because however your computer cools its hard drive, if it is a fan it will probably make a lot of noise. It is most likely your cooler.

A noisy computer fan could be the result of:

* A cable has slipped and is now banging against the fan * Fan could be old and the bearings are wearing out causing it to rattle * Fan is loose and simply rattling * Too much dust in the fan is preventing it from spining properly

My computer tower fan used to make a vacuum-cleaner noise because the fan blades were rubbing against the sides of the chamber. I stuck a screwdriver into the fan to shut it up, but eventually just bought another computer. If this is what's going on with your computer, look into replacing the cooling fan altogether.

its either really slow and its trying to work or its broken While "weird noises" is rather vague, possible causes of strange noises coming from a computer are usually one of two things: a fan malfunctioning or a hard drive dying. Generally when your computer starts making weird noises you should immediately backup your important data. If you have a can of compressed air, you may want to shut down the computer, open up the case, and try to blow any dust you can see off of fans and out of the case.

Mostly the noise is spinning fans to keep things cool. The grunts are the hard rive heads.
